Physical Therapist for Dancers
Targeted Care for Total Recovery
How can a physical therapist for dancers help?
Most physical therapists are unaware of the demands that dance places on the body.
A physical therapist for dancers has undergone specialized training in assessing a dancer’s injuries and creating a plan of care tailored to their return to dance.
A dance-based physical therapist also has personal knowledge of dance and understands how interventions need to be adapted to address a dancer’s specific needs.
Dancers have an unfortunate injury rate of over 95% over the course of their careers.
While some injuries are due to acute circumstances, over 65% of dancers’ injuries are due to overuse, which can be prevented with medical screenings and preventive interventions.
PRE-POINTE ASSESSMENT
How can a pre-pointe assessment be essential to a dancer’s health and career?
There are many factors that go into creating a healthy and talented dancer. One way to ensure that a dancer is technically ready for pointe work is by completing a pre-pointe assessment.
A unique option is having a licensed Doctor of Physical Therapy complete a pre-pointe assessment to ensure that the dancer has the adequate anatomy and strength to begin the amazing journey en pointe.
We are not here to tell anyone that they cannot go en pointe.
We are here to help dancers, parents, and dance instructors understand the unique demands that pointe places on the body and educate them on how to ensure the safest and healthiest experience en pointe.

Range of Motion Screening
Range of motion screening of the ankles and great toes is performed to ensure the dancer has the proper anatomy for a successful pointe career.

Strength Assessment
Strength assessment of the ankles, knees, hips, and core with the demands of pointe work in mind to help prevent injuries.

Balance & Technique Assessment
Assessment of balance, stability, and general technique to ensure the dancer can complete the rigorous training required to dance en pointe.
Physical Therapist
Kensi Tenhouse, PT, DPT
I was a competitive dancer for over 11 years based out of Marietta, GA (Go SOPAC!). I trained in all styles of dance and competed at both regional and national competitions.
Upon graduating high school, I attended Georgia College & State University where I earned my Dance minor. While at GCSU, I was a member of the Sassycats Dance Team as both a dancer and head coach. I also performed with the GCSU Community Dance Program and later became a dance instructor for the program.
Following college, I attended Georgia Southern University’s Doctor of Physical Therapy Program, where I had the amazing opportunity to complete part of my clinical training at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital in their Dance Physical Therapy Department.
During my time in Cincinnati, I worked alongside:
- Dance sports medicine physicians
- Dance physical therapists
- Dance athletic trainers
I participated in pre-pointe assessments and even had the opportunity to shadow the Louisville Ballet’s professional company during their performance of Cinderella.
In July, I moved to Savannah, GA with my husband and our three cats and began working alongside the incredible physical therapists at Ledesma Sports Medicine.
My Mission
All of my experiences have inspired me to pursue a career dedicated to providing the best care possible for dancers.
I have experienced firsthand how devastating injuries can be, and I am incredibly thankful to have received dance-specific care throughout my own life.
Now it’s my turn to give back to my community and provide that same level of exceptional care to dancers throughout the Savannah area.
